This is less about a patent more but I thought it would be interesting to note which companies have the most patents. http://gigaom.com/2013/01/10/ibm-were-number-one-in-patents/
Surprised? It's IBM! (I was.)
Interestingly enough, Google and Apple were both noted to have gained massive amounts of patents, but they still didn't break the top 10 companies. Place your bets, ladies and gentlemen:
I was very surprised to see that a lot of the top patent carriers are International companies.
The article notes a very interesting idea:
"Patent ownership represents more than just bragging rights. Increasingly tech companies rush to amass patents to protect themselves from infringement lawsuits and to wage legal war on competitors. Complicating matters are the “patent trolls” – companies that buy patents to assemble a legal arsenal to go after alleged infringers but don’t actually create technology. "
In any case, if you want to perhaps figure out where to look in future posts for patent issues, you may want to follow these companies!
This is very interesting news. The fact that all the companies are majorly electronic companies shows how important patents are for that sector/industry. But IBM is leading by a big margin and are definitely as innovative as their perception in the media is.
ReplyDeleteIt is wild that Apple nor Google is on this list, but at the same time, IBM is one of the founding innovative companies. I am curious to find out if this is pertaining to international patents, domestic patents, or either.
ReplyDeleteAlthough apple and google are not on the list, I think that they have only recently implemented their patent filing binge. (By recent I mean within the past five years) soon enough, they will surpass tech giants like IBM and Sony.
ReplyDeleteI can understand why its IBM since its been around for more than 100 years and at the time, they were innovating. Now, they are in the business of marketing and consulting services for hardware and software.
ReplyDeleteI agree with a lot of you guys. While Apple and Google have recently been filing many patents over the last few years, its IBM that has long been the patent king. It makes sense, although I would not be surprised if soon enough Google and Apple take the top spots.
